How to Quickly Get Through Airport Security and Reduce Frustration

Going through airport security can often be a stressful and time-consuming process. However, by following a few simple tips and anticipating the rules that may be enforced, you can make your journey through security quicker and more efficient. Here are some tips to help you navigate airport security with ease:

1. Prepare Your Documents

Before you even arrive at the airport, make sure you have all the necessary documents readily accessible. This includes your

  • Passport or identification card

  • Boarding pass

  • any other travel documents required for your specific destination

Keep them organized in a secure and easily accessible place, such as a travel wallet or a designated pocket in your carry-on bag.

2. Pack Smart

When it comes to packing, it's important to be mindful of what you can and cannot bring through airport security. Familiarize yourself with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) guidelines to ensure you comply with the rules. Remember to pack any liquids, gels, and aerosols in a clear, quart-sized bag and make sure they are within the allowed limits (usually 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters per container).

Additionally, consider wearing clothing and accessories that are easy to remove and put back on. Avoid wearing excessive jewelry, belts with large buckles, or shoes with complicated laces, as these may slow down the screening process.

3. Arrive Early

To avoid unnecessary stress and rushing, arrive at the airport well in advance of your scheduled departure time. This will give you ample time to check in, go through security, and find your gate without feeling rushed or anxious. Most airlines recommend arriving at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights.

Tip: If you have a credit card that provides lounge access this is a great time to take advantage of that benefit and fill up before your flight!

4. Follow Security Procedures

Every airport has different protocols and what they enforce often changes based on the time of day, the season, how busy they are, and sometimes... how the agent is feeling that day! Since it’s so hard to predict the rules, it’s better to assume you’ll have to go through the most strict security and be prepared.

These are some best practices:

  • Wear comfortable footwear that is easy to take off and on

  • Remove belts, watches, metal, accessories, and jewelry

  • Ensure the following are easily accessible so they can be sent through on their own:

    • Laptops or other large electronics

    • Quart-sized bag of liquids

    • Jacket or outerwear

It's important to always cooperate with the security officers and be prepared for a potential pat-down or additional screening if necessary.

Tips:

  • Place your items on the conveyor in the reverse order that you take them off; it makes collecting your things much easier

  • Always bring a jacket/coat with zipper pockets.

    • While waiting in the security line you can put all your smaller belongings in the pockets. It's much easier, faster, and more secure to simply place your jacket on the conveyor, pick it up, and sort your belongings once you're away from the commotion.

5. Additional Screening

Oh no!!! Did your items get kicked to the side and are no longer accessible to you?

Occasionally your items will be sent through a secondary conveyor after the scanner behind a wall. This happens when the scanner notices something that shouldn’t be there or something is unable to be identified. Patiently wait at the end of the retrieval conveyor; another agent will go through the bags manually and they require you to be present for the search. They will process the bags in the order they come so pay attention when yours is next.

Note: The most COMMON reason this happens is due to liquids. If they are in your carry-on make sure they are lying flat relative to the scanner overhead.

6. Be Mindful of Your Behavior

While going through airport security, it's important to remain calm and composed. Avoid making jokes or comments that could be misconstrued as a security threat, as this may lead to additional scrutiny or delays. Stay focused on the process and follow the instructions given by the security officers.

7. Utilize TSA PreCheck or Global Entry

If you frequently travel by air, consider applying for programs like TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. These programs provide expedited screening for pre-approved travelers, allowing you to bypass some of the standard security procedures. This can significantly reduce your wait time and make the overall experience more efficient.

Tip: I highly recommend Global Entry since it provides the same benefits as TS PreCheck and also expedited service through customs when returning to the US. AND Global Entry is only slightly more expensive than TSA PreCheck (~$20 every 5 years).

8. Stay Informed

Lastly, stay informed about any changes or updates to airport security procedures or your flight. Regulations and requirements may vary between airports and countries, so it's always a good idea to check for any updates before your trip.

Conclusion

By following these simple instructions and anticipating the restrictions, you can navigate airport security more quickly and reduce frustration. Remember to prepare your documents, pack smart, arrive early, follow security procedures, be mindful of your behavior, and stay informed. With these tips in mind, your journey through airport security will be a breeze!
